Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. the degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, or
  2. the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery, or
  3. the degree of Master of Dental Surgery, or
  4. the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) with at least Second Class (Honours), or
  5. the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Pharmaceutical Science) with a classification of Second Class Honours or better, or
  6. the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the Faculty of Science, with at least Second Class (Honours), or
  7. at least a Second Class (Honours) degree in a discipline related to health science, or
  8. a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in (a) to (f) above.

Applicants whose first degree was obtained more than 10 years previous to registration for the Course may also be admitted provided that they produce sufficient proof of their competence to follow the Course with profit. The Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a preparatory programme.

If you are a graduate in Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental Surgery and/or any other area of study deemed relevant by the Board of Studies, then this course is intended to provide you an advanced level of education, training and research. The course enables you to acquire advanced knowledge and research skills that could be employed in the academic and clinical setting. You will be required to find a local supervisor and submit a research proposal upon applying in order for the application to be referred for consideration.

This Master of Science Course, which is mainly by Research, will allow you to specialize in your chosen area of studies. The core subjects of the course are Research Methodology and Research Seminars. The Seminars ensure that you are aware of the research in the biomedical area within the University of Malta and other collaborating institutes.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science - M.Sc. – under the auspices of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and select appropriate source material including data from primary sources.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding in their chosen area of study.
  • Describe the discipline and principles guiding epidemiology.
  • Discuss the basic concepts of health informatics.
  • Describe the sampling techniques and the application of statistical methods to epidemiological study methods.
  • Appraise statistical output in existing literature.

As a holder of the M.Sc. in Pharmacy (Research), you will be able to enter a career in:

  • Life Science companies targeting the development of new drugs to treat various disorders.
  • Pharmaceutical companies, Hospital laboratories, Health Ministry and Ministry for Social Policy.

If you would like to further you studies, you may do so by pursuing a PhD at the University of Malta, or at a foreign institution abroad.
